Healthy Holiday Eating

Eating Local Is Elitist?

I was talking to a friend about how I was trying to be more “aware” in my food choices. I have been trying to eat locally produced food whenever possible.  I also try to eat organic food, with the least amount of processing and packaging.  My friend said, “Don’t you thing that is a bit elitist?”     What?????? Why are We So Fat?

It is a popular topic in the media these days. Why are we so fat? Of course, not me, not you, just the other 30% of adults who are overweight or obese.

Fingers are pointing everywhere, and diet books are bestsellers. You can almost guarantee that and TV program will have ads about the weight loss pill that really works!  Now you can even buy drugs over the counter that will keep your body from absorbing fat. (Watch those side effects though!)

Eating local in the Winter

For the past 6 months or so I have been trying to  eat local as much as possible.  Because I live near some of the richest farm land in the world, it has been fairly easy…until now.   The farmer’s markets have closed, my garden is done for the winter, and I didn’t do much preserving this year.   The local health food store has a few items.  Some cabbage and apples.  I have a bunch of chestnuts from a local chestnut tree.  But that is not enough to make a meal!

What to Eat?

I have been reading about food a lot lately. Not cookbooks and such, but books that have caused me to think about where my food comes from, how is it produced, how safe is it to eat?

It used to be easy, I would buy what was cheap, and try not to buy too much junk.  As long as we were eating meat and vegetables and fruit and bread and milk, I assumed we were eating a good diet.
